Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

Reconstruct the chapter as a single architectural argument: the morning dream-telling ritual establishes the family as an interpretive authority, Jonas's account of his dream about Fiona is received with clinical calm, Mother names the feeling Stirrings and introduces the pill, and Jonas's final reverie on his bicycle closes with the feelings slipping away. Articulate how each movement depends on the previous one for its apparent naturalness.

Discussion Questions

  1. Lois Lowry opens the chapter with Jonas remarking that he rarely dreams — 'fragments afloat in his sleep' he cannot 'grasp' or 'put together into something worthy of telling at the ritual.' Consider how this opening complicates our picture of the ritual: is a practice that requires dreams 'worthy of telling' still a practice of disclosure, or has it already become a practice of editorial performance, and what does Jonas's uneasy editorial work on his own dream about Fiona reveal about the mechanism?
  2. When Jonas asks Mother whether he must 'report' the Stirrings, she laughs and tells him 'You did, in the dream-telling. That's enough.' Consider what Lois Lowry is saying about the relationship between the intimate morning ritual and the public Speaker's announcements in this community: to what extent is the family's dream-telling table itself the state's reporting apparatus dressed in the register of breakfast and affection, and what are the consequences of that disguise?
