About This Passage

Lowry layers three Latinate weights — torturous, excruciating, distended — inside a single sentence so that the grammar itself carries the physical experience. The clinical register is deliberate: it forces the reader, who has no pill for this, to inhabit the memory as knowledge rather than as sympathy, which is exactly the transformation Jonas is undergoing in his body.

Jonas asked him after he had received a torturous memory in which he had been neglected and unfed; the hunger had caused excruciating spasms in his empty, distended stomach.

Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

In six to eight sentences, summarize Chapter 14 with particular attention to the architecture of Jonas's transformations: the second sled memory and the broken leg, the withheld relief-of-pain, the pedagogy of hunger, the Committee's petition about birth rates, the father's dinner-table disclosure about twins, and Jonas's inadvertent transmission of the sail memory to Gabriel. End with what Jonas chooses to conceal.

Discussion Questions

  1. Lowry introduces, through the Giver's refusal of relief-of-pain, a distinction between pain that can be chemically cancelled and pain that functions as information. Reconstruct the ethical defense of the second category, and identify the precise conditions under which withholding relief becomes indefensible even on the Giver's premises. Where is Jonas in relation to that limit?
  2. The Giver reports that the Committee petitioned him about a proposal to increase the birth rate, and that 'the strongest memory that came was hunger... followed by warfare.' What model of statecraft is Lowry proposing — one in which historical consciousness is a precondition of legitimate decision-making — and what does the model cost when it is concentrated in a single person rather than distributed?
