About This Passage
This passage was chosen because it is the single moment in the whole novel where an adult outside of Camp Green Lake finally acts in Stanley’s defense. Ms. Morengo is Stanley’s father’s patent attorney — she was never assigned to Stanley’s criminal case — yet she has done the investigating the Texas Attorney General should have done months earlier. Copying these three sentences slowly is how students learn to see that rescue, in this book, is always quiet and sideways: it arrives through an adult who noticed the wrong thing was happening and did the extra work to fix it.
Ms. Morengo explained that she was a patent attorney. “I’m helping your father with the new product he’s invented. He happened to mention your situation, so I did a little investigating.

Discussion Questions
Narration Prompt
Retell Chapter 49 to a grown-up in five or six of your own sentences. Name Sam the onion man, Mary Lou the donkey, Walter, Bo, and Jesse in the flashback; in the present, name Ms. Morengo, Stanley, and Hector riding in the BMW. Explain how Ms. Morengo proves Stanley did not steal the sneakers, how Zero confesses (and how Ms. Morengo handles it), what Stanley’s father has invented, and what happens in the sky in the book’s final sentence.
Discussion Questions
- Chapter 49 opens with a hundred-year-old scene (Sam, Walter, Bo, Jesse, onion juice) and closes with a one-sentence image (rain falling into the empty lake). What in the story links these two moments — how is the onion-juice warning from the past actually the answer to the rescue we just witnessed in the present, and what does this structure tell you about how Sachar has been building the whole novel?
- Zero tells Ms. Morengo, ‘I stole the sneakers,’ and she answers, ‘I didn’t hear that. And I advise you to make sure I don’t hear it again.’ How do you know that Ms. Morengo is choosing mercy over the strict letter of the law — and what makes you think her short reply is actually a kind of instruction Hector needs right now?
