About This Passage

This is what moral reasoning actually looks like in a scared fourteen-year-old. Stanley invents a deal, then runs the deal through a decision tree: what if she says no? what if she threatens me too? what happens to X-Ray? The passage is a miniature ethics problem with three variables — his own safety, Zero's safety, and the promise he made to X-Ray when he handed over the tube in Chapter 19. Notice the unmarked interior dialogue ('Tell me where you found it or I'll scratch you, too') — Sachar drops us directly inside Stanley's imagined conversation with the Warden, no quotation marks needed, because it is happening inside Stanley's head. Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

Retell Chapter 31 in your own words. Move from Stanley's opening anger at himself, through his two competing options (going after Zero vs. making a deal with the Warden), to the cold interrogation scene where the Warden orders Mr. Pendanski to erase Zero from the state files — and the full name 'Hector Zeroni' is revealed for the first time in the novel.

Discussion Questions

  1. Stanley repeats the phrase 'What he should do, he thought, was go out after Zero. But he didn't' three different ways in this chapter. What does the repetition of this almost-action reveal about Stanley's moral situation? How is this different from cowardice, and how is it different from prudence?
  2. The Warden's sequence of questions — 'You sure he has no family? … Is there anyone who might ask questions? Some social worker who took an interest in him?' — builds toward the order 'Okay, I want you to destroy all of his records.' Trace the interrogation line by line. What does her QUESTION ORDER reveal about Camp Green Lake that her direct statements never would?
