About This Passage

This short passage is the chapter's quiet revelation. For weeks Stanley has been told the holes are a way to 'build character,' and for weeks he has believed it. This passage is the moment he stops believing it. Copying the last sentence — 'He dug the hole into his memory' — teaches a reader how a writer can re-use a word in a surprising way: Stanley has been digging holes with a shovel all month, and now the narrator tells us he is digging one inside his own mind, to keep the secret safe where no one can take it away.

Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

Retell Chapter 15 in your own words, following the sequence: Pendanski filling the canteens, the Warden checking X-Ray's dirt pile with a pitchfork, the new wheelbarrow-and-partner system (with Stanley paired with Zero), the Warden's all-day supervision including 'You're doing fine,' the boys switching positions, the six-foot holes that find nothing, the end-of-day return to camp, Zigzag's theory about hidden cameras and microphones, Stanley's realization about X-Ray's silent breakfast, and Stanley's final decision to memorize the real spot.

Discussion Questions

  1. The Warden brings out a pitchfork and personally pokes through X-Ray's dirt pile — a job she could have asked the counselors to do. Examine what this personal effort tells you about how important the buried thing is to her, and consider what it says that the most powerful person at the camp is willing to do physical searching herself rather than delegate it.
  2. The Warden knows Zero is the fastest digger even though she has never (as far as we know) watched him up close. Investigate what this tells you about the amount of information she has been collecting about each boy, and consider what it means to live in a place where the person in charge knows small facts about you that you never told her.
