About This Passage
Three sentences that hand you a treasure one fact at a time. The first is four plain words — the moment of discovery, kept small on purpose. The second slows down to measure: not just 'a gold tube,' but one sized against Stanley's own finger, so you can see it in your own hand. The third walks around the object like an inspector: open here, closed there. Copy all three and notice what the writer leaves out — no excitement, no exclamation points. The plain telling makes the gold feel more real, not less.
He pulled it out. It was a gold tube, about as long and as wide as the second finger on his right hand. The tube was open at one end and closed at the other.

Narration Prompt
Retell the chapter in order: the holes that all feel hardest, the cloud the boys watch all day, the glisten, Stanley's climb out, the gold tube and its heart, the boys' guesses, the wait-until-morning plan, and the new place in line. Then name the sentence where you think the chapter's mood changes most, and use the chapter's words to defend your pick.
Discussion Questions
- Stanley has 'lost track of the day of the week, and how many holes he'd dug. It all seemed like one big hole, and it would take a year and a half to dig it.' Why might the writer melt all the separate days and holes into one? Use the chapter's words about the digging to explain what the one-big-hole picture helps a reader understand about Stanley's time at camp.
- At the dirt pile, Stanley has three reasons to stay put — he is exhausted, checking hardly seems 'worth the effort,' and anything he finds is promised away. The chapter shows his decision before it announces it: instead of dumping the next scoopful on the pile, 'he tossed it off to the side.' How does the writer let an action tell us the decision first? Use the chapter's words from that moment to explain why showing it this way works.
