About This Passage
Scout tells the reader that walking away from a fight is harder than fighting. She wants the reader to feel how much it takes a child to keep her fists down when someone says mean words about her father. The sentence teaches that doing the harder thing can be a way of showing love.
It was the first time I ever walked away from a fight. Somehow, if I fought Cecil I would let Atticus down.
