About This Passage

This passage shows the second of three small troubles in October. Judge Taylor was reading at home alone on a Sunday night when he heard a strange scratching noise. He went to the back porch and saw the screen door open and a shadow at the corner of his house. After that night, Judge Taylor kept a shotgun across his lap when he read. The passage is gentle in language but big in meaning: someone was trying to break into the judge's house, and the judge was now ready.
