The passage condenses Chapter 26's social phenomenology into a single paragraph. Lee gathers four observations and lets them sit in proximity without resolving them: that the events of the summer 'hung over us like smoke in a closed room' — a metaphor for moral residue that adults pretend not to smell; that Maycomb adults discussed the case with their own children but never with Jem and Scout, requiring those children to perform a politeness that 'left to their own devices' would have been settled by 'swift, satisfying fist-fights'; that the children of Maycomb were therefore compelled into gentility — Scout 'a lady,' Jem 'a gentleman' — which Lee likens to 'the era of Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose, without all her yelling'; and that Maycomb re-elected Atticus to the legislature 'as usual, without opposition' even while gossiping about him as a parental shortcoming. Scout closes with the chapter's most disenchanted line of narration: 'people were just peculiar, I withdrew from them, and never thought about them until I was forced to.'
