Mrs. Merriweather adopts a 'stately largo' for the child Scout — Scout records the affectation in musical idiom — then turns to Mrs. Farrow with the dropped register and racist contempt of the Sophy anecdote. The structure is the satire: the same speaker, in the same room, modulates from condescending performance to casual cruelty. The Sophy story climaxes with Mrs. Merriweather quoting back what Sophy said in Black dialect — 'Nome, Miz Merriweather, Jesus never went around grumblin' — Mrs. Merriweather quoting forced agreement as moral victory. Lee leaves the reader to register that Mrs. Merriweather has just narrated Sophy's coerced submission as evangelism.   2. Miss Maudie answers the missionary register with one sentence — 'His food doesn't stick going down, does it?' — and refuses to elaborate when challenged.
