About This Passage
This passage shows how Mary Pope Osborne builds a careful action one small step at a time. Notice the rhythm: stepped, reached, brushed, thought, covered. Each sentence is short and focused on a single action. Together, they slow the reader down and let us feel each tiny moment of bravery — exactly the way Jack feels them. Students will practice writing a single action across multiple short sentences, using past-tense verbs to anchor each move, and using a one-word interior thought ('Interesting') as a punctuation between physical action and mental noticing.
Jack stepped forward. He reached out very cautiously. He brushed his hand down the creature's neck. "Interesting," Jack thought. A thin layer of fuzz covered the pteranodon's skin.

Discussion Questions
- Jack tells himself he is going down to 'examine a pteranodon... like a scientist.' Is this a true reason, or is it the excuse a cautious person needs in order to do something brave? Why might Jack need a 'scientific' reason to do what Annie just does naturally?
- Annie names the pteranodon HENRY — the same name as the neighbor's dog they saw from the treehouse window in chapter 2. Why does Annie choose THIS name, of all possible names? What is naming a strange creature after a familiar one actually doing for her?
