About This Passage

This passage shows Mary Pope Osborne's craft in just four sentences. The first three sentences set up an opposition between the siblings using parallel short structures. The word 'But' is the hinge — it tells the reader these two children are different in an important way. Then the fourth sentence introduces something so unusual that the whole opposition starts to wobble: a treehouse 'tucked between two branches' is exactly the kind of impossible REAL thing that should not exist. Students will practice using 'But' to pivot between contrasting ideas and using 'tucked between' to compress place description into two precise words.

Annie loved pretend stuff. But Jack was eight and a half. He liked real things. At the top of the tree was a treehouse tucked between two branches.

Discussion Questions

  1. Mary Pope Osborne tells us that 'Annie loved pretend stuff. But Jack was eight and a half. He liked real things.' Why does the author put the word 'But' in the middle of these sentences? What is she quietly suggesting about which kind of person seems more grown-up — and is the author actually agreeing with that idea, or testing it?
  2. Annie says 'Just for a teeny minute' before climbing the ladder, then she climbs all the way up and disappears inside the treehouse. Was Annie lying to Jack, lying to herself, or simply doing what curiosity always does? What in the chapter helps you decide?
