Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

As an adult reader, retell the arc of Chapter 9 as a study in thresholds: the silent first entry into the walled garden, the kneeling work among the pale green points, the Martha-mediated letter to Dickon at Thwaite, and the return of the third crying in the corridor. Keep in view what Burnett is doing with silence, labor, and secrecy as moral materials, not just plot devices.

Discussion Questions

  1. Burnett's garden is, by Mary's testimony, 'the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place any one could imagine' and perhaps also 'a quite dead garden.' Take Burnett's doubled description seriously as a theological claim about what ten years of neglect can produce — a place that is neither alive nor dead but waiting. How does reading the chapter this way change what it means for Mary to kneel among the green points and clear the grass away? What is Burnett saying about the relation between attention and resurrection?
  2. Mary's first private act inside the walled garden is work — not prayer, not play, not rest, but labor with her hands on behalf of growing things that would otherwise be 'smothered.' Compare Burnett's account of this work to what you understand the classical and Christian traditions to have said about ora et labora, about the garden as the original form of moral education. Is Burnett writing a children's book inside that tradition, or reinventing it for a post-Victorian audience?
