Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

Summarize Chapter 4 in a paragraph of seven to nine sentences. Move from Mary's first morning in the tapestry room through Martha's Yorkshire candor, the detail of her eleven siblings, the walled gardens, Ben Weatherstaff's refusal to confirm the locked garden, and the robin's song — and identify the structural logic by which Burnett arranges these encounters. Propose one argument for why this order, and no other, produces Mary's first tender sentence.

Discussion Questions

  1. Burnett stages Chapter 4 as a sequence of educational encounters — Martha, the tapestry, the walled gardens, Ben Weatherstaff, the robin. Each is a different kind of 'teacher' Mary Lennox has never had. Argue for the implicit theory of education Burnett is dramatizing: what does this sequence claim about how a damaged child is repaired, and how does it differ from the explicit Victorian-Edwardian pedagogical models (governess, catechism, moral tales) available to Burnett in 1911?
  2. The narrator asserts, 'It is a Yorkshire habit to say what you think with blunt frankness, and old Ben Weatherstaff was a Yorkshire moor man.' Burnett's novel will increasingly locate virtue in the Yorkshire landscape and its people. Examine this sentence as a piece of ideology — what class, regional, and pastoral commitments does it smuggle into the book, and what does the novel gain narratively by naturalizing frankness in this way? What would be lost if we took the sentence at face value?
