What is the mature religious anthropology Burnett is proposing here, and what in the experience of adult life allows you to recognize, or resist, her claim that reverence and delight are not opposed but mutually reinforcing?
2. Dickon's speech to Ben Weatherstaff's robin — 'Tha' knew how to build tha' nest before tha' came out o' th' egg' — makes an explicit claim about innate knowledge, delivered in dialect by an unschooled boy. As adult readers, we have had time to notice which human capacities seem to have been given rather than learned. Which of these, in your own experience, has aged best as a candidate for innate knowledge — and which has come to look, on reflection, more like something culture taught you while you were not looking?
