About This Passage
In this one line Screwtape gives away the whole trick. He wants the man hunting for a church that 'suits' him so he will become a 'critic' — someone always judging — instead of a 'pupil,' someone who listens and learns. Copying this sentence shows how two small words can hold a big choice: at church, and in many places, you can come to judge or you can come to learn, and the Enemy wants the man to come to learn.
In the second place, the search for a ‘suitable’ church makes the man a critic where the Enemy wants him to be a pupil.

- At church the Enemy wants the man to be a 'pupil' who listens, while Screwtape wants him to be a 'critic' who judges.
