About This Passage

Pony has been on bedrest for a week after collapsing at the lot. Reading old yearbooks one afternoon, he stops on the photograph of Bob Sheldon — the Soc whose death sent him and Johnny on the run. For the first time in the novel, Pony slows down enough to ask who Bob actually was, and he uses what other people have told him as evidence: Cherry's 'sweet and friendly,' Randy's 'best buddy a guy ever had,' the small contradictions that make a person rather than a category. Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

Narrate Chapter 11 in your own words. Walk through Pony's week of bedrest, the moment he discovers Bob's photo in Soda's yearbook, his slow rebuilding of Bob as a real person, Randy's awkward visit in the doorway, the conversation about the upcoming hearing, Pony's claim that he was the one who killed Bob, his denial that Johnny is dead, Darry sending Randy out, and the final moment when Darry calls Pony 'little buddy' for the first time.

Discussion Questions

  1. Pony asks if Bob had a kid brother who idolized him, a big brother who told him to slow down, parents who loved him 'too much or too little.' What in the story shows that Pony is using the questions he might ask about himself to imagine Bob into a real life?
  2. Pony tells Randy, 'I had the knife. I killed Bob,' even though Randy saw the truth. How can you tell that Pony is trying to protect Johnny — even Johnny's memory — by carrying a burden that wasn't really his?
