After Johnny dies in the hospital, Ponyboy walks home in a daze. When he opens the front door, he sees what is left of his gang. Steve, Soda, Darry, and Two-Bit are all bandaged from the rumble. Pony stands very still and looks at each one. He is hurt too, with blood in his hair, and he is about to tell them the worst news of all. The bandages and the quiet show that the night has cost the boys a lot.
