About This Passage

After Pony watches Dally raise an unloaded gun and let the police shoot him down, his mind tries to make sense of what just happened. The word 'editorials' is loaded — Pony has been reading newspaper write-ups of Johnny since the church fire, and the press has cast Johnny as a small-town hero. Dally will not get the same treatment. But Pony refuses to leave Dally inside the simple word 'hoodlum.' He pulls up specific memories — the fire, the loaned gun, the loyalty — and uses Johnny's word, gallant, to redraw the line. The passage marks the moment Pony begins thinking like a writer: complicating other people's verdicts with the truth he has lived.

Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

Narrate Chapter 10 in your own words. Trace Pony's stunned walk home, the kindness of the stranger in the car, the gang gathered bandaged in the living room, the news of Johnny, the phone call, the death scene at the lot, Pony's collapse, his fevered days in bed, his fragile conversations with Soda and Darry, and the closing image of two brothers asleep together. Pay attention to how the chapter shifts between outer events and Pony's interior state.

Discussion Questions

  1. Pony spends the long walk home repeating, 'Johnny is not dead,' and convinces himself it is true. How can you tell Hinton is showing denial as a real psychological response — not weakness, but the mind buying time it needs to survive?
  2. Pony first sorts the two deaths neatly — 'one a hero, the other a hoodlum' — and then spends a paragraph dismantling that frame for Dally. What in the story shows that Pony is starting to refuse the easy categories the world hands him?
