This is the second time Warner gives the reader Joe's interior decision to be more careful — and the second time Joe responds to the decision by doing what people who must be more careful do: he leaves the scene. Notice the precision of 'and so he said he would have to get back to his work.' Joe is not announcing his plan to be more careful; he is enacting it through retreat. The cause-and-effect of the sentence — recognition, then exit — is the entire structural pattern of how a careful person manages a slipping disguise. Notice also that this is the same sentence pattern as the chapter-3 closing thought ('Joe is a very strange handyman to know the names of the different kinds of seaweed'), now placed in Joe's mind instead of Henry's. The two minds are converging on the same observation from opposite sides. Satisfies criteria A (the precise word 'appeared'), B (the cause-and-effect rhythm), C (the structural rhyme with the chapter-3 closing), and D (the theme of how disguise becomes self-aware too late).
