Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

Render an analytically dense retelling of Chapter 9 that names its three structural movements: (1) the inflated daydream in which Pinocchio promises Geppetto a gold-and-silver suit; (2) the appetitive seizure in which the fife and drum redirect his attention and the maxim ‘there is always time’ authorizes the reversal; (3) the marketplace negotiation that ends with the A B C card in the hands of a seller of old clothes and Collodi’s closing reminder of Geppetto trembling at home.

Discussion Questions

  1. Pinocchio’s morning monologue establishes that he loves Geppetto specifically and accurately — he names the coat, the shirt sleeves, the cold, the sacrifice. The chapter’s ethical scandal is therefore that Pinocchio fails Geppetto while loving him. What does this chapter teach about love’s philosophical insufficiency as a moral guarantor, and what auxiliary virtues does Collodi suggest are required to make love efficacious in conduct?
  2. ‘There is always time to go there’ is the chapter’s most quietly destructive sentence. Analyze the rhetorical move by which Pinocchio converts a contingent deferral into a universal license, and consider whether this kind of self-deception is best classified as a vice of the will, the intellect, or the imagination — and what difference the classification makes for moral practice.
