About This Passage
This is the saddest sentence so far in the whole book. The CARD that Geppetto bought by selling his only warm COAT is now SOLD again — for just four PENNIES — to a seller of old clothes. Pinocchio gives away his father’s sacrifice for the price of a puppet show. Read the sentence slowly and feel how quietly Collodi tells us this terrible thing.
“For four pennies I will take the A B C card,” said a seller of old clothes, who heard the conversation. So the card was sold at once.
