About This Passage
This passage is the chapter's clearest small picture of what is wrong even on the way to the Country of Playthings: a donkey kicks Pinocchio off twice, the boys laugh and cheer, and the driver punishes the donkey by biting off pieces of its ear. The student who copies it slowly will notice that everyone is laughing while a small cruelty is happening, and that the donkey's fight is the first warning the chapter gives that the trip is not what it seems.
