This is one of the funniest and saddest pictures in the book: Rowdy is so sick from sour mash that he has dug himself a dog-hospital under the watering trough. Copying it teaches children that sick animals know how to take care of themselves — cool damp earth against a hot belly, cold water every ten minutes — and that a story can make you laugh and feel sorry at the same time. Rawls shows, without saying a single hard word, that Rowdy is paying a real price for going to the bottoms with Jay Berry.
He went out to the barn lot and dug him a deep hole down in that damp ground under the watering trough. About every ten minutes he crawls out of his hole, rears up on the trough, and drinks water.
