Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

Summarize the chapter's narrative arc and central premise, then identify the philosophical and political tension at the heart of the trilogy and evaluate whether Lu handles it honestly within the constraints of YA dystopian fiction.

Discussion Questions

  1. Marie Lu opens the second book of her trilogy with a chapter that is structurally and tonally unusual for the genre — almost entirely interior, contemplative, paced to the speed of June's actual thoughts rather than to the conventions of YA dystopian thrillers. Analyze the craft decisions that make this slow opening succeed where it might easily have failed. What is Lu willing to leave out? What does she trust her reader to supply? And what is the cost of the slowness, both as a craft risk and as a market gamble?
  2. The chapter contains a moral fact that should function as an irreparable rupture: June paid the Patriots with money she received as a reward for Day's capture. She is now traveling with Day, having spent the proceeds of his arrest to buy his rescue. Lu does not draw attention to this. Is the silence an act of authorial confidence (trusting the reader to do the moral arithmetic without preaching), an evasion (allowing the relationship to develop without confronting its financial origin), or something more complex — a deliberate refusal to let prose moralize what character must dramatize over time? Consider what the chapter's silence implies about Lu's trust in her reader and her trust in her own characters.
