About This Passage

This sentence shows young writers how a character can feel two things at the same time — grateful AND embarrassed. Being saved is usually good, but for Pinky it also feels a little bad because he wanted to be brave on his own. Good writers let their characters feel mixed-up things.

It was embarrassing enough to be bullied, but to be saved by an old woman made it even worse.
