About This Passage
This passage teaches a useful sentence pattern: time + place + mission. The first sentence sets WHEN and WHAT (Friday, December, rescue mission). The second sentence sets WHY (two new demigods) and WHO IS THE ENEMY (monsters). Together, they give the reader everything they need to feel the urgency. Students learn how a writer can start an action scene by giving the reader the basic facts before the action begins.
It was a Friday in December, and we were on a rescue mission. Two new demigods had been found at a school in Maine, and we had to get to them before the monsters did.
