This is one of the novel's most important retroactive revelations. For seven chapters, Sally's marriage to Gabe seemed like victimhood — a good woman trapped with a terrible man. Grover's explanation transforms it into the most extreme sacrifice in the book: Sally chose daily humiliation and misery to keep her son alive. The reveal also explains why she never left Gabe despite having every reason to. The passage models how new information can completely change the meaning of events the reader thought they understood.
