About This Passage
This passage is the heart of chapter three. The button shop is closed. Mrs. Hirsch is gone. Annemarie is worried — but Mama says, 'Friends will take care of them.' Copying this trains the scout to notice the small steady words: gently, nodded, of course. The chapter is teaching the reader that the answer to 'what do we do when something bad happens?' is a quiet, ordinary one — friends bring food. Friends go to the house. That is what love looks like in a hard time.
"Friends will take care of them," Mama said gently. Annemarie nodded. Mama was right, of course. Friends and neighbors would go to the home of the Hirsch family. They would take them fish and bread.

Retell chapter three in your own words. Begin with Mama buttoning Kirsti's jacket and the broken button. Then tell about the closed button shop with the German sign. Then tell about Peter coming at night with seashells, and about the news that Mrs. Hirsch is Jewish. End with Annemarie saying that all of Denmark must be a bodyguard for the Jews now, too.
