About This Passage

This is the moment the war finally ends and the Danish people are free again. The bells ring, the flags go up, and people cry happy tears while they sing. Copying these words helps you feel how a whole country celebrated together — and remembered everyone who was lost — on the same day.

Churchbells rang all over Copenhagen, early that May evening. The Danish flag was raised everywhere. People stood in the streets and wept as they sang the national anthem of Denmark.

Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

Tell what happens in this last chapter in your own words. The war is over. What do the people of Copenhagen do? What does Annemarie's family learn about Peter? What does Annemarie find in the blue trunk, and what does she ask her papa to do with it?

Discussion Questions

  1. Mrs. Johansen and other neighbors took care of the empty apartments belonging to the Jewish families who had fled — they watered the plants, dusted the furniture, and polished the candlesticks. Mama said, 'It is what friends do.' What in the story tells you that the neighbors believed the Jewish families would come home one day?
  2. Peter wrote a letter from prison the night before he was shot. He said he loved his family, that he was not afraid, and that he was proud of what he had done. How do you know from his letter that Peter had become brave by Uncle Henrik's definition of bravery — keeping your mind on what you must do, even when you are scared?
