Mid-run, Lowry pauses the urgency long enough to let Annemarie remember her mother as a child on this same path, with a dog named Trofast, in a meadow that summer used to fill with curious cows. The pause is not decorative. It tells us what is actually at stake: not only the lives of the Rosens, but the continuity of a place — a meadow whose meaning has been built up across generations of children walking through it on their way to ordinary lives.
