About This Passage
Kate DiCamillo lets us peek inside three sleeping characters at the same time. Notice that two of the three dreams are about toast. The author is teaching us who Mercy is and who Mrs. Watson is by what they dream about.
Mr. Watson was dreaming of driving a very fast car. Mrs. Watson was dreaming of buttery hot toast for Mercy. Mercy was dreaming about hot buttered toast too.

- In chapter 1, Mercy DECIDED to climb into the Watsons' bed because she was afraid. Now in chapter 2, all three of them are in the bed dreaming. Was Mercy's decision in chapter 1 a good idea or a bad idea? What in chapter 2 makes you think so?
- Two out of the three dreamers are dreaming about TOAST. Why do you think Kate DiCamillo gave Mercy and Mrs. Watson the same dream? What does it mean when two people who love each other dream about the same thing?
