Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

In your own words, tell the story of this chapter. What were the most important moments? What made them important — and how do you know?

Discussion Questions

  1. Jack hears Annie splashing behind him in the moat and is sure she is a crocodile. The 'crocodile' turns out to be Annie all along. Why does Jack's mind reach for crocodile instead of Annie? What does the story tell us about how fear distorts what we hear? What in the story makes you think so?
  2. Mary Pope Osborne tells us in chapter 7 that the flashlight is dying. In chapter 8 it actually dies, exactly when Jack needs it most. Was it bad luck for the batteries to die at this moment, or was Mary Pope Osborne planning the timing? Find evidence for your answer in the chapter.
