About This Passage
These two short sentences teach a real fact about the past. The first sentence has the word AND between two important things — long distances AND dangerous distances. The second sentence is even shorter. It tells us why knights wore armor — because it kept them safe — but in just four words. Young writers will practice using AND to join two ideas, and using a very short sentence to give an important fact.
Knights wore armor when they traveled long and dangerous distances. Armor was very heavy.

Tell someone what happened in this chapter in order. When you get to the most important part, slow down and tell it carefully — what happened, why it mattered, and what you think about it.
Discussion Questions
- Jack reads in the book that 'crocodiles in the moat' might have lived in some castle moats. Annie wants to look at the REAL world while Jack looks at the BOOK. Who is right — should you look at the world first or read about it first?
- Jack writes in his notebook every time he learns something new from the castle book — 'Heavy head,' 'Crocodiles in moat,' 'Hawks in Hawk House,' 'They eat peacocks.' Why does Jack take so many notes? Look back to book 1 — has Jack always taken notes like this?
