Discussion Questions

  1. Mary Pope Osborne depicts Jack's discovery of the M as a small instance of empirical reasoning — observation, comparison, inductive leap, formalized conclusion. Her implicit position is that intellectual response and emotional response are continuous rather than opposed: Jack thinks about the discovery AND feels its weight (the deep breath, the 'amazing' label). This stands closer to the integrative views of Antonio Damasio and Martha Nussbaum than to the eighteenth-century rationalist tradition that treats reason as separable from passion. Where do you stand on the continuity question? Is it possible to have a purely intellectual response that contains no emotional component, or is every act of cognition accompanied by some emotional valence — and if the latter, what does this imply for the entire Cartesian project of separating mind from body?
  2. Annie and Jack do not tell their parents about the adventure. Their silence belongs to the moral category of true things that cannot be communicated to listeners who lack the framework to receive them. The same problem arises for combat veterans, mystical experiencers, and survivors of unusual events. Develop a Socratic question about whether this kind of silence is morally equivalent to honesty, morally equivalent to dishonesty, or constitutes a third moral category that standard ethics has not adequately theorized. Connect to the broader question of how a person should respond when their experience exceeds the conceptual capacity of their normal social network.
