This small passage is the moment Brian decides to try to fly the plane by himself. Paulsen uses short sentences that repeat the words 'had to' so the reader can feel Brian finding his courage one step at a time.
He had to fly it somehow. Had to fly the plane. He had to help himself. The pilot was gone, beyond anything he could do.
