About This Passage

This is the closing movement of Chapter 2 — the moment Brian's waiting ends and the survival plot begins. Paulsen accumulates Brian's patient labor (seventeen transmissions, the memorized procedure) and then cuts through it with a single finite verb: 'died.' The quiet that follows is rendered in negative terms — 'cut only by the sound of the wind' — and the final sentence yokes a deliberate mind-action (pushing the nose down) to an involuntary body-action (throwing up). It is a master-class in how two verbs, placed side by side, can make a reader feel what being human at the edge of capacity actually is.

Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

In four to six sentences, retell the events of Chapter 2 — Brian's realization that the pilot is dead, his first attempts to fly the plane, his radio contact with a fading voice, the plan he builds for an emergency landing, and the engine cutting out at the chapter's end.

Discussion Questions

  1. Paulsen opens the chapter by describing Brian's hands as 'lead' and Brian's mind as unable to act. Analyze how the author uses the body's stillness — the paralysis before panic — to show what shock actually does to a person, and explain why he refuses to let Brian spring into heroic action.
  2. Brian picks up fragments of flight knowledge from books he has read, a CB radio in his uncle's pickup, and the pilot's brief earlier lesson. Assemble these three sources from the chapter and explain what the author suggests about how survival knowledge actually gets carried — not as expertise, but as scattered pieces Brian has to find inside himself.
