About This Passage
This passage was chosen because it shows the three farmers reacting with rage to Mr Fox's nightly visits. The sentences move from a feeling (rage) to an explanation of the feeling (they don't like to share or be stolen from) to an action (they grab shotguns and hide). The passage contains three vocabulary words in their natural setting (stolen, shotgun, robber).
Boggis and Bunce and Bean knew very well what was going on, and it made them wild with rage. They were not men who liked to give anything away. Less still did they like anything to be stolen from them...

Discussion Questions
Narration Prompt
In three or four sentences, retell Chapter 2: describe where Mr Fox and his family live, what Mr Fox does each night, how the farmers Boggis, Bunce, and Bean react, and the plan Bean reveals at the end.
Discussion Questions
- Mr Fox steals one chicken, duck, goose, or turkey every night to feed his wife and four Small Foxes. What in the story tells us why Mr Fox steals, and how is his reason different from the reason a mean person might steal?
- Mr Fox is called 'too clever' for the farmers because he always walks into the wind so he can smell Boggis, Bunce, or Bean hiding before they can see him. How do you know Mr Fox thinks carefully before he acts, and why is thinking ahead important for a fox who wants to stay alive?
