Summarise Chapter 18 for another adult reader in six to eight sentences. Pay attention to four register-shifts that distinguish the coda from the rest of the novel: the protagonist's on-page absence, the villains' reduction to four modal predictions, the inversion of pathetic fallacy (trickling rain rather than dramatic storm), and the final sentence's triple rupture (frame-break, first-person intrusion, present-tense fix). Close by naming what the chapter accomplishes formally — a conclusive ending that refuses to close.

  1. The novel's final sentence — 'And so far as I know, they are still waiting' — performs three formal operations at once: it breaks the third-person frame, it introduces the narrator as a specific first-person speaker for the first time in the novel, and it shifts into the present tense, extending the farmers' condition into the reader's own now. Examine this sentence as a compositional achievement. What does Dahl gain by refusing to close the frame, and how does the first-person uncertainty ('so far as I know') function differently from the omniscient confidence a conventional ending would deploy? Compare to the final sentences of other novels that employ direct address — Thackeray's Vanity Fair, Fielding's Tom Jones, Eliot's Middlemarch — and examine what tradition Dahl is working within and what he modifies.
  2. Dahl stages the novel's final tableau with clear Beckettian compositional lineage: three characters in a fixed position, suspended in waiting for an event that will not occur. But the philosophy is not Beckett's — Mr Fox exists, has simply relocated, and the farmers' ignorance is a punishment rather than an existential condition. Examine the resemblance and the refusal. What does Dahl borrow from the absurdist tradition, and what does he insist on keeping outside that tradition? Consider the question through the lens of genre: how does the fable's built-in entitlement to selective justice (some characters deserve resolution, some do not) permit Dahl to deploy absurdist staging without adopting absurdist metaphysics?
