Discussion Questions
Narration Prompt
Retell Chapter 16 in four beats: (1) Mabel's descent into the cellar and the foxes' scramble to hide; (2) the overheard conversation between Mabel and Mrs Bean revealing Bean's plan; (3) the almost-discovery (she is one jar away); (4) Mabel's exit and the foxes' triumphant escape with three jars of cider.
Discussion Questions
- Mabel casually tells Mrs Bean she wants Mr Fox's tail as a 'souvenir' and is only mildly disappointed when told it's ruined — she switches to wanting the HEAD instead. What does this exchange reveal about how Mabel and Mrs Bean see Mr Fox? Is this evil, or something subtler — a casual cruelty that doesn't know itself as cruel?
- Mr Fox learns by accident that Bean is waiting above the hole in a tent with a gun, expecting the fox to 'make a run for it this morning.' How does the OVERHEARD nature of this information change its value? Would it matter differently if Mr Fox had found out through a fight or a scout?
