About This Passage

This passage is doing serious work in the comic register. The opening establishes the imposition (Dad signed me up), the second sentence pivots to interpretation (I think he just wanted me out), the third sentence supplies the consequence (looking even worse), the fourth sentence shows the escape attempt (tried to come up with a way), and the closing clause delivers the chapter's quietest insight: 'whether anyone in this family actually listens to anyone else.' This final clause is precisely what Greg has been doing wrong throughout the previous chapter (failing to listen to others), and the irony is that Greg complains about being unheard while remaining unaware that he is the same kind of unhearing person himself. The passage rewards imitation for its building structure (each sentence makes the situation slightly worse), for the use of 'the kind of thing that makes me wonder' as a softener that lets the speaker approach a serious complaint without committing to it, and for the closing reflection that opens onto a much larger question about family communication while pretending to be a small frustrated aside. Students learn that a paragraph can tell a small story (Dad signed me up, I tried to escape, I had to go) and ALSO open onto a larger question (does anyone in this family listen) at the same time, with the larger question carried by the closing clause that seems casual but is actually load-bearing.

Dad signed me up for Wilderness Explorers without even asking me. He said it would be good for me, but I think he just wanted me out of the house. The thing about Wilderness Explorers is that it's ful...

Narration Prompt

Summarize this chapter, then explain what you think the author most wanted the reader to notice or feel. What techniques did the author use to create that effect?

Discussion Questions

  1. Greg complains that no one in his family listens to anyone else, but the previous chapter showed that Greg himself does not listen to others — his resolution list cataloged everyone's faults without ever acknowledging that he might be one of the people contributing to the problem. Is Greg unaware of his own unlistening, or is he aware but unwilling to apply the criticism to himself? What is the difference between these two readings, and how can a reader tell which is happening in any given moment?
  2. Wilderness Explorers represents a specific American institution — the structured outdoor youth program that promises to build character through difficult experiences. The institution has roots in the early 20th century concerns about urbanization, masculinity, and the perceived softness of modern life. Is Kinney critiquing this institution, accepting it, or holding it in tension with Greg's individual experience of it? What evidence supports each reading?
