About This Passage

This passage teaches a specific and useful move: an admission hidden inside a refusal to admit it. Greg agrees with Rodrick but will not say so aloud, and he tells the reader exactly why — acknowledging the agreement would 'ruin everything.' Students learn how a writer can show a character's real feelings through what the character chooses NOT to share. The passage also shows how humor works through overstatement: 'the thing that will kill a rock band the fastest' is not a scientific claim but a kid's way of naming an absolute truth. This is a teachable form of exaggeration — not lying, but underlining.

Mom tries to get involved with Löded Diper because she wants to help. But Rodrick says a mom's help is the thing that will kill a rock band the fastest. I think Rodrick is right for once, but I'm not ...

Discussion Questions

  1. In this chapter, for perhaps the first time in the book, Greg quietly AGREES with Rodrick about something (Mom's interference will ruin the band). But Greg will not say so aloud. What does this silent agreement reveal about the real relationship between the brothers? Is their conflict as total as Greg has told us it is, or is there a hidden thread of understanding running underneath?
  2. Greg's mother tries to help Rodrick's band by rewriting the lyrics to be more cheerful and family-friendly. Rodrick is horrified. Is Mom wrong to try, or is she right to try and just wrong about HOW? What is the difference between well-meant help that is wanted and well-meant help that is resented, and what signals tell us which kind of help we are offering?
