About This Passage

Selected for the long string of short, simple sentences that all together describe a single act of secret kindness. Lobel could have written this in one or two long sentences. He uses six instead. Notice the rhythm: each sentence is one small step in Frog's careful work. The repetition of "He" and "Frog" makes the prose feel patient, like the work itself. The copywork lesson is in how short sentences can build something quietly important without ever raising their voices.

Frog came into Toad's house. He came in quietly. Frog found the hat and took it to his house. Frog poured some water on the hat. He put the hat in a warm place to dry. It began to shrink.

Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

In your own words, tell the story of this chapter. What were the most important moments? What made them important — and how do you know?

Discussion Questions

  1. Toad's hat does not fit. Frog offers to give him something else. Toad refuses, even though the hat is so big it falls over his eyes and makes him bump into trees and fall in holes. What does Toad want more than a hat that fits — and what does this refusal tell us about how Toad thinks about gifts?
  2. Lobel could have written the chapter so that Frog noticed the problem and apologized openly, and they fixed the hat together. Instead, Frog fixes the hat in secret while Toad sleeps. Why this choice? What does the secret give Toad that an open repair would not have?
