About This Passage

This sentence describes what Harold sees when he comes downstairs and finds Chester has filled the room with garlic. The author uses three places — doorways, windows, and around Bunnicula's cage — to show how thoroughly Chester has done this. Notice that the sentence has a list inside it, separated by commas. Lists like this make a writer's description feel complete, as if no part of the room has been missed. Copying this sentence teaches a writer how a careful list can show that a character has been thinking hard about something — even if the thinking has led them to do something silly.

I survey the room and saw that it was strewn with garlic on the doorways, over the windows, and around Bunnicula's cage.

Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

Tell someone what happened in this chapter in order. When you get to the most important part, slow down and tell it carefully — what happened, why it mattered, and what you think about it.

Discussion Questions

  1. Chester puts garlic all over the room — on the doorways, by the windows, around the cage — and even tries to make Harold wear a garlic necklace. The smell makes Harold's eyes water and feel sick to his stomach. Was Chester being protective of his friend Harold, or was Chester only thinking about his own vampire plan? What in the story makes you think so?
  2. When Chester asks Harold to help get Bunnicula out of his cage so Chester can pound a sharp steak into the rabbit's heart, Harold helps even though he is starting to think the rabbit is just a small sleepy animal. Was Harold right to help Chester with a plan that might hurt Bunnicula, even though Harold was not sure the rabbit was really dangerous? What in the story makes you think so?
