Discussion Questions

Narration Prompt

Summarize the chapter in no more than four sentences. Then identify the philosophical claim the chapter is making — about memory, about enumeration, about the ethics of telling a child the whole truth — and evaluate whether DiCamillo argues for the claim or merely observes it.

Discussion Questions

  1. DiCamillo's chapter gives us a list of ten items in the unadorned voice of the preacher, with almost no narrator commentary. Analyze what this sustained restraint accomplishes. What does it cost the book to hold back Opal's interior reactions, and what would be lost if she had interrupted to weep or to ask questions at each item? Is there a specific literary tradition — Hemingway's iceberg theory, Raymond Carver's minimalism, the late style of Marilynne Robinson — to which this refusal belongs?
  2. The preacher's inclusion of item 9 (the drinking, and the fights it caused) raises a specific ethical question: what does a parent owe a child in the way of truth about another parent who has abandoned the family? Is DiCamillo endorsing the preacher's decision to tell the hard truth, or merely reporting it without endorsement? And does the answer depend on whether Opal is eventually seen to bear the information well?
