About This Passage
These two sentences come from the preacher's prayer at the beginning of the party. Notice the word 'complicated.' Most prayers would just say 'wonderful' — but the preacher says friends are BOTH complicated AND wonderful. That is honest. Friends can be hard to understand sometimes, but they are still a gift. Copying these sentences teaches children that the most grown-up prayers are the ones that tell the whole truth.
Thank you most of all for friends. We appreciate the complicated and wonderful gifts you give us in each other.

Discussion Questions
- The preacher's prayer thanks God for 'the complicated and wonderful gifts you give us in each other.' Why did the preacher use the word 'complicated'? Are friends complicated?
- The Dewberry boys did not come to the party at the start. The chapter makes a point of noticing they are not there. Why is it important that they have not arrived yet?
